GoPro takes on Snapchat with QuikStories

GoPro’s free app, QuikStories, lets you turn your adventures into an Instagram-ready film without the need for any high-end editing software – or even a computer. By connecting your GoPro camera to your smartphone, the app will stitch together all your clips and automatically prepare a short video to share with your mates.

Availability

GoPro’s QuikStories is available to download for Android and iOS.

What does it do?

QuikStories is kind of like a mix between your Snapchat Story and Google’s intelligent Photos app. It’s designed to take the effort out of physically piecing together an account of your day, instead doing it all by itself.

You can still choose which clips you want to include, and in which order they’ll appear, but the app takes care of the majority of the legwork. It’ll even chuck in some accompanying music for added effect.

Before you can post your videos online, you’ve obviously got to shoot it. And the app can help with that, too. You can use the app as a remote monitor and shutter button to make sure all your shots are perfectly framed.

Before QuikStories came along, it was possible to create your own stories, but it wasn’t easy. GoPro CEO, Nick Woodman, commented on the new app: “While we had all of the tools, previously, for our customers to get to an edit and realize the value of owning a GoPro, we’re pretty candid that that was a very complicated solution for somebody to figure out…

“When you're reviewing the footage [shot with the GoPro], it's as though you captured it with the phone itself … that's a much more compelling solution and experience than what GoPro was before QuikStories.”

What could be better?

There is a slight speed bump when it comes to the new app. GoPro says that your camera must have more than 20% charge before you start transferring everything to your phone. Otherwise, it could die half way through, meaning you’d have to start all over again.

Although this isn’t the end of the world, if you’ve been filming all day and you were hoping to have something ready by the end of the day, you’d be wise to pack a few spare batteries.
