Moto G4 Play hands on

The Moto G Play is here, and it’s a welcome addition to the hugely successful Moto G series.

From what we’ve seen so far, it just might be one of the best budget smartphone bargains around. Here’s what we made of it when we got our hands on it recently.

Design

The Moto G Play has a solid, weighty feel to it. The hard rubber body and rounded edges make it easy to grip and comfortable to hold. It certainly doesn’t feel like a phone that’s going to slip out of your hand any time soon.

The other highlight is the phone’s water repellent nano coating. So you won’t have to put it away and stop hunting Pokémon when it starts to rain.

Display

When it comes to the display, you’re looking at a 5-inch IPS LCD screen with a 720p resolution. Colours look good, text is sharp, and the automatic brightness works well. We found the display easy to view, even in quite bright conditions.

Best of all is the fact that the Moto G Play uses super-tough Corning Gorilla Glass 3, which is the kind of protection you’d normally only find on more expensive smartphones.

Camera

The Moto G Play’s camera weighs in at 8 megapixels. We think that’s an acceptable figure for a low priced smartphone, and we managed to take some decent photographs with it, especially outdoors in good lighting conditions.

Round the front, there’s a 5 megapixel selfie camera that can also handle video calls.

Software

The Moto G Play runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow out of the box, for a clutter-free stock Android experience that rightly has a lot of fans.

Stock Android is also less battery intensive. Every little helps, and you should find that the Moto G Play’s 2,800 mAh battery will keep you powered up through an entire day without any worries.

Under the hood

The Moto G Play runs on the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 quad-core processor as last year’s Moto G, paired with 2GB of RAM.

It’s perfectly capable of multi-tasking, and should be able to handle most games without any annoying stuttering.

Other features

A small yet nifty feature on the Moto G Play comes when you swipe up from the bottom of the screen. That shrinks the screen to about 75% of its actual size, making it much easier to use with one hand. Thumbs up to that.

Sound good? Moto G Play is avilable to buy from Carphone Warehouse right now. Click the link to be taken through to our website.
