Huawei Mate 10 Pro hands on

Biggest, best Huawei smartphone ever

The Mate 10 Pro is a big, powerful smartphone, with a lot to offer. Huawei has gone from strength to strength over the past few years, and this device is the pinnacle. This is what it can do…

Design and display

The first thing you’ll notice about the Huawei Mate 10 Pro is its massive display. It measures 6-inches from corner to corner, and it features the super-tall 18:9 ratio, with tiny bezels at the top and bottom. The screen has Full HD resolution and has HDR 10 technology, which really highlights vivid colours and gives you greater contrast in the darker colours.

Around the back, it’s all glass, with a horizontal defined stripe across the back with the dual lens Leica camera and dual-tone flash. The camera is certainly one of this smartphone’s many top features, but we’ll talk about that more below.

The glass build and minimal design are also resistant to water and dust, certified as IP67, which means it can be submerged in one meter of fresh water for 30 minutes.

Camera

The dual lens rear camera has an impressive f/1.6 aperture, which lets lots of light into the sensor for perfect shots, even in poorly lit environments. And when you use the 20MP monochrome sensor along with the 12MP RGB sensor, you can digitally recreate the deep blur you’d get from using a DSLR camera – taking your shots to a pro standard.

The camera is capable of much more than impressive photos, however. The built-in AI lets the phone identify what you’re pointing the lens at, so it can automatically adjust the likes of colour, contrast and exposure to perfectly suit the landscape.

Under the hood

The Mate 10 Pro’s impressive specs aren’t just skin-deep - continuing on the inside, too. There’s an enormous 4,000mAh battery, built with intelligent power management to make sure you’re never left with a flat battery.

It learns from your behaviours, in an effort to maximise usage, and minimise unnecessary loss of power. So, if you’re not using the phone for a long period of time, any apps that are still running in the background will power down, making your battery go further than ever.

On the power front, the Mate 10 Pro is the first smartphone to feature the Kirin 970 AI processor – which is all about efficiency, essentially letting you do more stuff at once. Without getting too technical, you’ll be able to enjoy a smoother, quicker user experience, without using excessive power.

There's one more little party trick up the Mate 10 Pro's sleeve. By connecting the phone to a larger screen with a cable, you can projection and share what you see on the screen - ideal for work and home life.
