Your smartphone could save you a fortune

Smartphones have near endless uses. They help us get work done, keep us in touch with people, entertain us and even keep us fit and healthy. But did you know your smartphone can help save you money?

Take the school run, for example. Sitting in traffic wastes hundreds of pounds in petrol. Waze is an app that gives you live updates so you can avoid the jams and save fuel.

Phones can help cut home energy bills too. Ever left a light on? Phillips Hue is a smart light bulb that can be turned on or off from your phone no matter where you are. The Belkin WeMo Switch does the same thing for plug sockets so anything can be turned off remotely.

The biggest bill in the home is heating, and a smartphone can help there too. EverSense is a smart thermostat that uses your phone’s GPS to know where you are. If it’s cold and you’re on your way home, it’ll turn on automatically. And when you’re out, it’ll make sure your boiler’s off.

Never charge your phone again

It’s all well and good making savings with the latest app tech, but keeping your phone fully charged can be expensive. Npower says wasted electricity from charging phones, like when you leave your phone plugged in overnight, costs enough to power a town the size of Canterbury.

Soon, however, our phones and tablets will tap into sources of free power so we never have to plug in again.

Japanese phone maker Kyocera has already shown off a smartphone with a solar panel built into its screen so you get unlimited free power.

Recent research has also shown how the Wi-Fi signals coming from your broadband router can be turned into electricity without slowing down your internet.

With technology like this, your next smartphone will pay for itself in no time.
