What is virtual reality?

Is VR the future?

VR isn’t anything new, but it’s taken a different shape in recent years. What was once a cumbersome and expensive experience you would never dream of having at home, is now exactly the opposite. This is what Google recksons tot he big question:

Virtual reality

noun.

The computer-generated simulation of a three-dimensional image or environment that can be interacted with in a seemingly real or physical way by a person using special electronic equipment, such as a helmet with a screen inside or gloves fitted with sensors.

Oculus Rift

Oculus is the leader of the virtual reality headsets, and undoubtedly the most powerful. It offers a really immersive experience, which is largely attributed to its rapid refresh rate. This means that when you move your head, the world you’re in moves with you at the same rate your eyes are used to. It doesn’t look artificial, and it’s really easy to lose yourself.

Oculus is expected to hit the shelves in the first half of 2016.

HTC Vive

HTC Vive works with laser protectors, normally positioned in the corners of the room you’re in, to help track your movements. It also comes with two handheld haptic controllers so you can use items in the virtual world. Read our hands-on with Vive here.

In our video above you can see the headset in action, but accompanied by a load of unsightly wires. When the product is ready for the public next year we expect it to be a lot more streamlined, and maybe even operating under a different name.

Vive is on a world tour at the moment, mainly dropping into tech shows to get the buzz going, but we're expecting to see a consumer-ready product in 2016.

PlayStation VR

PlayStation VR, formerly known as Sony Project Morpheus, is set to revolutionise the gaming world. Much like the HTC Vive above, it uses handheld controllers, which will allow users to pick up and use items in the games they’re playing.

Presumably there will be different shapes (guns, bats, swords etc.) available for different games when the headset hits the shelves. All eyes are trained on 2016 for the big release.

Samsung Gear VR

If you’re looking for the virtual reality experience on your mobile, look no further than the Samsung Gear VR.
