What is Google Now on Tap?

One of the best Android features

Smartphones are getting smarter all the time. Virtual assistants are nothing new, but their capabilities continue to grow, which at the end of the day, makes our lives easier.

One of Android's finest features is Google Now on Tap, which is kind of like other virtual assistants, i.e. Siri and Cortana, but it doesn’t have a personality. It’s more of an inbuilt know-it-all that will get you organised.

In a nutshell, Now on Tap means you can delve deeper into whatever you’re looking at with one long-press on the home button. It will scan the whole page, and find anything it can then search online for. As well as Google’s search engine, it also links up to the apps you have installed on your device.

This will hopefully give you an idea of how it all works…

YouTube trailers

When watching film trailers on YouTube, give the Now on Tap button a go, and you’ll be offered local cinema schedules, movie news and casting info.

Google music

This doesn’t just work with Google Music, we’ve tried it on Spotify too. In some instances it will bring up tour details if you favourite band is currently on the road, but we haven’t seen this work in every trial.

This could purely be down to the fact there isn’t any local dates, or the fact Google hasn’t been able to crawl as many pages as it normally would in order to find the information.

Calendar

Are you always forgetting plans due to your hectic schedule? Google Now will add stuff to your calendar straight from emails or text messages with a quick tap.

What do you think of Now on Tap? Let us know in the comment below.
