Send and receive payments through iMessage
Apple is making it easier to send and receive money with iPhone, through a new feature called Apple Pay Cash. But what is it? Is it safe? And how do you use it? This is everything you need to know...
How does Apple Pay Cash work?
It all works through the iMessage app and means you can send funds to your friends or colleagues without having to log into any banking apps. It’s technically part of the Apple Pay system, with your bank details stored in iOS’ virtual Wallet.
To send money, you just need to tap the App Store symbol in the redesigned iMessage app drawer, and then select how much you want to send. And for peace of mind, it’s all secured - and encrypted - through Touch ID, or Face ID if you’re using the new iPhone X.
The cash you’re sending will be deducted from whichever card you’ve nominated to be attached to your Wallet. But when you’re receiving cash, it’ll go straight onto your virtual Apple Pay Cash card. You can then transfer it to a real account, or use it when paying for stuff with Apple Pay.
What about fees?
It’s a pretty standard affair when it comes to additional fees with Apple Pay Cash. If you’re using a standard debit or Visa card, you’ll not be charged anything by the bank for payments. However, you’ll be looking at a 3% fee when using a credit card.
Siri’s on board, too
Apple’s virtual assistant, Siri, is ready and raring to help with your payments. If you and your mates are discussing anything to do with money, Siri will push the Apple Pay app to the front of your iMessage app drawer. And if a certain amount is mentioned in the conversation, that amount will automatically be set, so you can get things done quicker.
When can I use Apple Pay Cash?
The peer-to-peer payment is only available in the US for now, unfortunately, but it’s thought it’ll be coming to the UK shortly. In the meantime, you could check out the likes of Pingit.
