Best video calling apps for any smartphone

When we were growing up, the thought of actually seeing someone while you were talking to them on the phone was the stuff of Star Trek. But in the last 10 years or so, the likes of Skype have made it a part of normal life – it even comes built into your smartphone.

The only problem is that your built-in video-calling app might not work with your friend’s phone. FaceTime, for example, will only work on iPhone or iPad. There is a solution, however - download one of these apps that work with any smartphone.

SkypeSkype

Android, BlackBerry, iOS, Windows Phone

Skype is one of the fathers of modern video calling, and in recent years it’s become pretty perfect. When we first used it on our computers back in the noughties, video quality was terrible, connections constantly dropped and there was huge lag. Now you can have a smooth, HD conversation with friends and family anywhere in the world.

ViberViber

Android, BlackBerry, iOS, Windows Phone

Viber has only offered video calls since the end of 2014, but they’re already pretty polished. You can even transfer video calls from your phone to your PC, which is handy if you have to pick up a call while on the move but would rather see a bigger picture when you can.

WhatsAppWhatsApp

Android, BlackBerry, iOS, Windows Phone

WhatsApp has been testing video calls since the start of the year, so you’ll get the feature soon. The reason we’ve added it to our list is that WhatsApp is the most popular instant messenger around, so as soon as video calling arrives, most of your friends will be ready to chat to you.

Facebook MessengerFacebook Messenger

Android, BlackBerry, iOS, Windows Phone

Facebook Messenger gets a lot of stick for its annoying chat bubbles and the fact that it really should just be part of the Facebook app. But it does offer smooth video chatting with any of your Facebook friends. Plus, with well over a billion people use the social network every month, you can pretty much video call anyone you know.

What’s your favourite video calling app? Give us your tips in the comments below.
