The new Huawei P20 series is here

Huawei reveals its P20 smartphone series

Bonjour, smartphone lovers. We’re here in Paris, where Huawei has officially revealed the new P20 smartphone series, including the incredible Huawei P20 Pro. It’s the world’s first to have a triple lens camera. And it might just change the way you take photos on your phone. Read on for more on the new Huawei P20 Pro, P20, and the P20 Lite.

Huawei P20 Pro: world’s first triple lens camera revealed

Where else to begin, but with the P20 Pro? Huawei CEO, Richard Yu took to the stage here to proclaim that the company is “Introducing professional camera technologies in a tiny smartphone.”

Huawei promises that you can take professional photos and videos more easily than you can with cameras and other smartphones, and that its 40MP Leica triple lens camera will kickstart a ‘renaissance in smartphone photography’.

How? It uses clever AI tech to help you take amazing photos without trying, even in low light. In other words, you’ll have no excuse for taking a bad photo, ever.

“Everyone can take professional photos”, the Huawei CEO says.

Triple the lenses, triple the photo fun

On the back of the phone is a 40MP, 20MP, and an 8MP 3x telephoto zoom camera. Together they deliver a 5x hybrid zoom, so you can get closer to your subject without any loss of detail.

Huawei says it has the "best zooming performance" at 5x compared to other smartphones. With 4D predictive focus, the camera predicts movement to eliminate blur.

You won’t miss a thing either. UltraSnapshot tech means the camera can shoot as fast as 0.3 seconds from being switched on.

Clever AI inside the phone understands what you’re looking at, and automatically adjusts the settings for the perfect photo. It will even help you to frame group shots with people when you take a photo. It takes the guesswork out of photography, and makes it easy for anyone to take amazing shots, even in low light. Handheld night mode combined with AIS (Huawei’s AI Image Stabilisation) means you won’t need a tripod to take pro-looking pictures. You can also record in Super slow-mo at 960 frames per second for extra dramatic effect.

On the front is a 24MP camera, which Huawei says takes the best selfies and portrait shots perfect for sharing on your Instagram, or even your LinkedIn profile. The camera uses skin tone adjustment, so your shots will look more human-like. You can even adjust the lighting after you’ve taken a photo. Portrait mode works in low light, too.

Beautiful design, powerful performance

The Huawei P20 Pro isn’t so bad in the looks department either. A 6.1-inch OLED FullView HD+ display makes your photos and movies look beautiful. The notch at the top of the screen is also smaller so you see more of your notifications. Performance should be quick, too, thanks to a powerful Kirin 970 octa-core processor and 6GB RAM.

There’s also plenty of storage. A massive 128GB of internal memory provides lot of room for all those photos you’ll be taking with that triple lens camera.

And then there's face unlocking. Huawei says it’s 100% faster than on iPhone.

Long-lasting intelligent battery

The clever AI technology extends to the battery. It knows when you’re in danger of running low on power, so you won’t have to worry about your battery dying on you before the day is out. Huawei’s SuperCharge technology lets you recharge the device fast, just in case you forgot to plug it in overnight.

Huawei P20: for the social media-loving busybody

The second phone Huawei unveiled here in Paris was the P20. It doesn’t have the triple lens camera of the P20 Pro, but it’s still capable of taking amazing photos.

It has a slightly smaller 5.8-inch FullView HD+ display, and a 20MP and 12MP dual lens camera packed with the same AI technology as the Pro model. The camera will automatically detect the best camera settings in real-time as you’re taking a photo.

You get the same outstanding low-light performance, too. The P20’s Super Night Mode takes perfect photos after dark, which makes it perfect for capturing memories on a night out.

The front of the P20 features a 24MP front camera, just like the P20 Pro has. Huawei reckons it takes the perfect selfie. Portrait lighting effects make sure your selfies come out perfect every time.

Under the hood is a 970 octa-core processor, and 4GB of RAM, and the same generous 128 GB of storage as the Pro, and SuperCharge fast charging.

And that’s a wrap

Here’s a recap of what we’ve seen here in Paris:

The Huawei P20 Pro is the world’s first triple lens camera packed with AI technology that automatically detects the best camera settings for you.

Then we had the Huawei P20. A next-in-line premium phone, this time with a dual lens camera packed with the same AI camera skills as the Pro, and the same 128GB storage capacity.

But there's more. The Huawei P20 Lite: an affordable phone with premium features

Although it wasn’t announced at the Paris event, the Huawei P20 Lite will also be available. While it’s Lite by name, it’s not light on features. This is an affordable phone with a premium list of skills.

For a start you’ve got a 5.8-inch FullView HD+ display, fingerprint scanner, and a powerful 16MP and 2MP dual lens camera on the rear. The dual lenses work together to give your shots a professional look, with beautiful blurred bokeh background effects. Around the front is a 16MP camera for all your selfie-taking needs.

Storage-wise, we’re talking 64GB of space. You can increase this up to 256GB with a microSD memory card.

Performance is speedy thanks to a Kirin 659 octa-core processor, and 4GB of RAM. The P20 Lite should have no problem with multiple apps being open at the same time.
