The future of the internet of things

In the movies

In Steven Spielberg’s classic 80s film, Back To The Future 2, we see the McFly family enjoying some time together, in what creators assumed the 2015 connected home would be like. And, in all fairness, they weren’t far off from the internet of things. We see a video conferencing call not dissimilar to Skype, biometric access to the home (just like the fingerprint scanners on Samsung and HTC devices), voice activated appliances, and even some snazzy wearables – Google Glass who?

But what will the house of the future really look like? Well, as we’re in 2015 now, we’ve got a much better idea than the BTTF gang did 30 years ago.

Internet of things - coming to a home near you

Take for example, Electrolux’s connected oven, which the Swedish company is aiming to be customer-ready by this Christmas. The oven will allow you to monitor whatever you’re cooking via your smart TV or an app (iOS and Android), with options to alter the temperature, humidity and even watch your food via an interior camera.

“The internet of things (IoT) is now becoming an important micro-trend and a game changer in the appliance business,” says Electrolux’s chief technology officer, Jan Brockmann.

“Over the next year [2015] we are going to launch a broad array of connected appliances in our core markets – the kitchen, the laundry room and the home comfort area.”

Electrolux isn’t the only business that’s pooling focus into the connected home, with products from the likes of LG, Sony, Panasonic, Sharp and Samsung quickly becoming more accessible.

Bring everything together

The AllSeen Alliance is a non-profit consortium, which oversees the enabling of the IoT. As of 2016, products from the list of manufacturers above will all ship with the AllSeen Alliance logo on them, meaning they should be able to communicate with each other.

The missing piece of the puzzle is a great app that will allow the likes of the Nest thermostat, Phillip’s hue lighting system, or even Electrolux’s app-operated oven to work together. The tech industry has the resources, we just need an app developer with the vision to create something that will be easy enough to work for everyone.
