Super Mario coming to Android

After its debut on iOS, Super Mario Run is finally coming to Android

iPhone and iPad owners have been able to enjoy Nintendo's Super Mario Run game since December, leaving Android users in the dark. But, it's finally time to share in the nostlagia, as the game is set for Google Play release in March.

The first Super Mario mobile game sees the moustachioed mini-marvel strutting his stuff in a very familiar setting, and as the title might suggests, Super Mario Run is of the endless running variety.

How to play Super Mario Run

It's a tale as old as time. Our protagonist is invited to Princess Peach's castle because she's baked him a cake. Unfortunately, bad guy Bowser - who's just the worst - gets wind of the invitation and threatens to have the cake, and the Princess, for himself. Enter Mario.

Everyone's favourite Italian plumber automatically runs from left to right, and it’s your job to help him jump over obstacles, grab power-ups and defeat baddies. You can do this with one hand, by simply tapping the screen. The longer you tap, the higher Mario jumps. It’s as simple as that.

As you progress through the levels, you’ll need to deal with blocks that change Mario’s direction, and others that can stop and start him. Just don’t forget that your ultimate goal is always the same – collect coins, and get to the flagpole at the end of the level.

There’s also a cool multiplayer battle mode called Toad Rally, where you can pit yourself against real-life opponents from around the world (including your friends). There's no end-of-level flagpole to reach in battle mode though – you simply keep going until your time runs out, and try and rack up an unbeatable score.

Nintendo’s video game legend, Shigeru Miyamoto, recently spoke in some detail about Super Mario Run’s gameplay. He said: “From an overall gameplay perspective, the courses are a little bit shorter than normal because it’s really geared toward the quick play on a mobile device … if you’re not very good at Mario, you still get a real good sense of running through the level and reaching the flagpole at the end of the level.”

How to get Super Mario Run

Super Mario Run is free to download, with additional in-game content available to purchase. If you're using an iPhone or iPad, you can head to the App Store right now, and if you're using Android, you can regeister for an update on the Google Play Store to make sure you're the first to get your hands on it.
