Turn that frown upside down

January is always the toughest month of the year. Christmas is long gone, the weather’s bleak, your new fitness routine isn’t going to plan, and you’re still skint after the holidays.

So, in light of everyone’s new shoestring budget, we’re looking into how your smartphone can help you save money.

Don’t go over your data allowance

Is your New Year’s resolution to be more mindful of the monthly phone bill? Using too much data is the most likely offender in this game, and keeping an eye on it isn’t all that difficult.

Remember that when all those videos automatically play on Facebook and Twitter, that’s eating up your data. Basically watching or listening to anything while not connected to a Wi-Fi connection is going to have a big drain on your internet allowance.

To check out how much data you’re using, head to your settings and you should find a breakdown of what’s apps are getting through the most.

Avoid paying to get your own money

Most banks have their own apps nowadays, and with them you can find nearby cash machines that don’t carry a withdrawal charge. Because there are few things worse than having to pay to access your own, hard-earned money.

Organised loyalty cards

Loyalty cards are great for saving cash on your purchases, but they’re not always the easiest to keep on top of. With mobile-pocket however, you’ll be able to digitally store all your cards in one place. Check out our full app review here.

Making calls abroad

Have you got friends or family traveling the world? Avoid hefty international calling fees by calling over the internet. Services like WhatsApp, Skype,Viber, and now even Facebook Chat allow you to call using the internet – which won’t cost you a penny if you’re connected to a Wi-Fi network.

The same goes for sending text messages. Don’t bother paying for overseas roaming bundles if there’s an online messaging service you can use instead.

Uber

If you haven’t already, you should get involved with the Uber revolution. It’s often cheaper than getting a cab and easier to book. If you don’t already have an account, but someone you know does, get their promo code and you’ll both get £10 free credit.

Top tip – make sure you keep an eye out for what Uber calls ‘surge times’ - this is when an area gets particularly busy. During these busy periods (which sometimes only last a minute or two) Uber ups its prices, but this will drop to normal again when the area cools down.
