Samsung takes wearables beyond the smartwatch

Samsung’s big CES 2016 event gave us some exciting updates about the Gear S2 smartwatch, but the company’s best stuff at the Las Vegas tech show didn’t get a big announcement.

There are loads of interesting new wearables in the tech giant’s booth. There are a couple of projects from Samsung’s Creative Lab, as well as clothing like a smart belt, sensor-filled workout wear, smart suit, solar-powered bags and even a golf shirt.

Samsung Rink

Samsung Rink is one of the company’s Creative Lab projects, which means it was created as a side project by one of Samsung’s ingenious employees.

Samsung Rink

Rink is a pair of handheld controllers for virtual reality. The system can be added to any virtual reality headset and lets you use your hands in the virtual world. Unlike the handheld controllers designed specifically for Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, Rink can detect individual finger movements for incredibly fine control.

Samsung TipTalk

The next gadget from the Creative Lab is Samsung TipTalk, a smart strap that brings your traditional watch into the 21st Century.

Samsung TipTalk

It does fitness tracking, notifications and calls, but TipTalk’s coolest feature (and the one that gave it its name) is its ability to let you make calls by putting your finger to your ear.

TipTalk sends vibrations through your wrist to your fingertip so you can take a phone call or listen to messages being read out while looking like a secret agent.

Samsung WELT

Samsung WELT, or wellness belt, is an advanced fitness tracker that also keeps your trousers up. It can track how many steps you take, tell you how long you’ve been sitting for, monitor your eating habits and scare you into the gym by showing you your waist measurement.

All the data is sent to a custom-made app that analyses everything and turns it into handy information, like how much weight you’ll gain if you spend every day watching Netflix and eating crisps.

Samsung Body Compass 2.0

If you’re looking for a new gym outfit, the Samsung Body Compass 2.0 will help you get more from your workouts. It has six sensors to track things like heart rate, breathing and body fat - much more than your average fitness tracker has.

Samsung Sol Bag

Samsung’s Sol Bag has solar panels that charge your phone while you’re out and about. The panels provide enough power to charge a smartphone in about four hours. Unfortunately there’s no built in battery so you can’t store the sun’s energy for use at night.

Samsung Smart Suit

You might think it strange to buy a suit from Samsung, but the Korean company is enormous and actually has several fashion brands already.

Samsung Smart Suit

To create the Smart Suit, Samsung’s fashion arm teamed up with the electronics branch and added NFC to a sharp-looking outfit. The NFC tag lets you do things like unlock your phone as you take it out of your pocket, or switch between Office Mode and Driving Mode with a swipe of the wrist.

Bean Pole Golf smart shirt

One of Samsung’s many brands is the clothing-maker Bean Pole Golf, and at CES 2016 it’s shown off a smart shirt. It has NFC built in, just like the Samsung Smart Suit, and can tell you the weather and UV rating where you are.
