Could learning to control your dreams be better than virtual reality?

Is there a next level to VR?

Dare to dream

We can’t wait for the rise of virtual reality, with 2016 looking to be the year it all comes together. We’ve already spent some time with some of the big titles, like Oculus Rift and Samsung Gear VR, but what if the ground-breaking technology had been with us all along?

Imagine if you were able to control what happened in your dreams. You could literally do whatever you wanted to, without having to give the normal laws of physics a second thought.

You could dance on the rings of Saturn, fly over Victorian London, have dinner with Marilyn Monroe… the possibilities are endless. This looks to be the direction VR wants to pursue, but could we save a bomb on headsets and app store purchases if we could simply dream the software?

Lucid dreaming

Sometimes a dream may feel like you’re the lead actor in someone else’s film, which is in fact directed by your subconscious. The guys behind Remee (shown in the video above) think you should be able to take control of your dreams and become the author of your own adventures.

After reading the synopsis on the Remee website, it does seem a very Inception-esque concept. Being able to harness what the team refer to as ‘lucidity’ is the mask’s sole purpose, supposedly made possible through a series of blinking lights.

The tiny bulbs in the mask flash over your closed eyes when in REM sleep (rapid eye movement), which is widely attributed to deep dream sleep, allowing you to recognise the dream state. Once you’re aware that you’re dreaming, you should be able to take control.

If this product really works and becomes widely accepted by the masses, should we all start carrying totems like the characters do in Inception? What if we become hooked on lucid dreaming and reality becomes a blur?

If you’ve had any experience of Remee, or know someone who has, leave us a comment and tell your story.
