Huawei Mate S vs Samsung Galaxy S6 edge+

It’s no secret that Samsung is more popular than Huawei. But let’s see how their latest giant smartphones compare with each other when we take a close look at them side by side. We’re talking about the Samsung Galaxy S6 edge+, and the Huawei Mate S.

Before we get started, it’s worth bearing in mind how these two phones compare on price. The Mate S is one of the most affordable big screen smartphones available right now. The S6 edge+ on the other hand, is a premium phone at a premium price.

Design and display

Design-wise, these two good looking phones are actually quite similar, with the curved screen on the S6 edge+ being the main point of difference.

The S6 edge+ has the better display of the two phones. Its curved 5.7-inch Quad HD screen beats the Mate S’s 5.5-inch Full HD for both size and quality.

The Mate S’s display still impressed us though - and it’s also worth noting that it extends right to the edge of the handset for a truly immersive experience. However, it’s a point in Samsung’s favour for starters.

Camera

The S6 edge+ also comes out on top when it comes to the rear camera. It boasts 16-megapixels compared to the Huawei’s 13-megapixels.

It’s a different story around the front, however. The Huawei’s 8-megapixel camera definitely has the upper hand on the 5-megapixels on the S6 edge+.

There’s a lot more to camera than mere megapixels, and we’re pleased to report that both phones also come with optical image stabilisation, to help you take sharp photos even in shaky or bumpy conditions. With all that in mind, we’ll declare a draw on the camera front.

Performance

Under the hood, both handsets are pretty equally matched on processing power, and the same goes for the battery capacity. The Huawei’s isn’t quite as powerful, but it’s a physically smaller phone - so you could argue that it doesn’t need to be.

Summary

The Samsung Galaxy edge+ is an amazing phone, no doubt about it. However, as we said at the start, it costs quite a bit more than the Huawei Mate S.

Although the Huawei may fall a short of its rival on a couple of key areas, it’s going to cost you a lot less in the long run. And you’ll still have a fantastic smartphone experience.
