Time to face the music

As the New Year rears its ugly head, it’s time to forget all about those lazy mornings and face reality once again.

But it’s not all doom and gloom – it’s important to remember that the New Year is a time to wipe the slate clean, turn over a new leaf and start a fresh.

At the top of most resolution lists is losing weight or getting fit - which is hardly surprising given everyone feels gross after gorging on pigs-in-blankets for the past week. But unless you’re willing to contend with all the other New Year resolution-ers for a spot on the treadmills, it’s time to get creative. And the smartphone in your pocket is more than capable of getting you up and moving.

Getting started

There are loads of apps to help get you motivated about health and fitness, not to mention a bunch of wearables that can track your progress and help maintain healthy living. But if you want to get started right away, without downloading anything or having to go to the shops, this is for you.

Samsung Health

Samsung has its own fitness tracker built into its phones (also available to other Android devices), which will act as your personal fitness coach. With Samsung Health you can track how well you’re sleeping each night, how much physical activity you’re doing, and how your diet is affecting your health.

And, with a little help from the heart rate monitor on the Galaxy S8 or Note8, you’ll be able to keep track of how hard you’re working.

If running is your resolution, Samsung Health is a great partner. Built-in GPS will track how far you’ve run and how fast you’ve done it, and if you use headphones, you’ll receive motivational voice guidance, so you can keep up the pace.

Sony Lifelog

Just like Samsung, Sony has a fitness app built into its smartphones called Lifelog. And as the name suggests, it helps log your life.

The beauty of Lifelog is that it’s not just a fitness tracker – it’s much more. Wherever you go, Lifelog will be working in the background to help you keep track of how you’re living and what you’re doing. Look back on your day and see how many pictures you took, how many songs you listened to, and how far you’ve travelled.

Of course, it can also team up with Sony fitness wearables so you can really get your teeth into tracking your training.

Google Fit

Google Fit is a fairly universal app available to all Android users. It’s not quite as comprehensive as the others, but it does track how far you’ve travelled and how many calories you’ve burned.

In the Fit app you can select what kind of activity you’re doing, like yoga, cycling or running, for example, and build up points throughout the day to hit your personal goals.
