Explore the world with your smartphone

For the stay-at-home wayfarer

Have you always dreamed of spreading your wings, selling all your worldly possessions and exploring this fine planet we call home? We bet you have, but we also recognise that life gets in the way of this dream. Plus it’s all really far away, and costs money, and takes effort etc.

Thankfully, a few options exist that invite you to survey the whole world right from the comfort of your own home. Does that sound more like it? Yeah, kick back - we’ve got you.

Earth Cam

Earth Cam provides live video streaming services, for free, in over 1,500 cities. Its network covers all 50 US states and 46 different countries, and you can tap in and watch whenever you like.

So, if you want to catch a flash mob in New York’s Times Square, watch the sun dip below the horizon in Istanbul or check out the zebra crossing The Beatles made famous on Abbey Road - it’s all just a click away.

Google Maps & Earth

Google understands your globetrotting desires, equally. With Maps and Earth, you can go pretty much anywhere you want, and now in even more detail than ever before.

Street view on maps has recently seen an update allowing you to scale the peaks in Yosemite National Park, while there are now countless 3D cities available to explore on Earth.

In true Google style, the company has gone the extra mile and animated the water flowing under the Golden Gate Bridge, which is essentially its backyard. It’s all about the details.

ISS live feed

If this all sounds a little too close to home, and you’ve got your sights set a little higher, the International Space Station has a live video feed streaming 24/7. You can also listen in to the crew’s communications with Mission Control.

The ISS orbits the Earth once every 90 minutes, traveling around 17,000mph, seeing a sunrise or sunset every 45 minutes. There’s also an accompanying live map so you can track whereabouts the astronauts are as they speed around the world.

The camera’s direction is changed every now and then, but on some occasions you’ll see more of the actual station as oppose to the epic views of Earth.
