Casio smartwatch lasts a month between charges

Casio, famous for its G-Shock watches, has unveiled its first Android Wear smartwatch at CES 2016 – an impressive timepiece designed for outdoorsy people.

The headline feature of the Casio Smart Outdoor Watch WSD-F10 (not quite as catchy as Moto 360 or LG G Watch, is it?) is the ability to tell the time for a month on a single charge, much longer than the two days other Android Wear watches manage.

Casio Smart Outdoor Watch WSD-F10It pulls off this remarkable trick by having two screen layered on top of each other. If you want the battery to last as long as possible, use the monochrome LCD screen. This only tells the time and date, much like a classic Casio digital watch.

If you want to use all the smart features, you can turn on the full-colour TFT LCD touchscreen and get access to all the usual Android Wear apps, plus a few extra tracking features from Casio. In this mode, the battery is said to last over a day.

Along with the impressive battery life, Casio has made the Smart Outdoor Watch incredibly tough. It meets US military MIL-STD-810 standards, which means it’s shockproof and waterproof to a depth of 50 metres. In theory, you could take Casio’s smartwatch diving, or rock climbing, or on any other extreme outdoor activity.

Given its tough credentials, Casio has done a good job of designing the Smart Outdoor Watch. It looks like a Casio G-Shock, only a bit bigger as it has to house more electronics.

So far, the Casio Smart Outdoor Watch WSD-F10 has only been confirmed for Japan and the USA, and the watch maker says it’ll cost around $500 (£343.25).
