Best apps for your gap year

The summer has finally arrived, bringing with it balmy weather and the desire to get away from it all. But, before you roll up to the airport, you should make sure your smartphone is packed too.

Here are a few of our favourite app to take away. And, do you know what the best part is? No extra baggage fees.

Skyscanner

Available for Android, iOS and Windows Phone.

Skyscanner compares thousands of airlines to find you the cheapest flight. It’s really easy to use, works in seconds, and lets you complete detailed searches so you can find exactly what you’re looking for. It should be your first stop for saving money on your summer holiday this year.

There’s also a desktop version, but for when you're on the go, we'd definitely recommend the free app.

Foodspotting

Available for Android, BlackBerry, iOS and Windows Phone.

If you love to experience local food when in another country, you should probably check out Foodspotting. You and other Foodspotters can review local restaurants and dishes, leading others to the freshest fish in Florence to the crispiest duck in Dartford.

XE Currency

Available for Android, BlackBerry, iOS and Windows Phone.

XE Currency is perfect is you’re travelling through different countries using their own currencies. The app will convert every currency on the planet, and also offers live rates and charts.

If you can’t get online, and fear the rates may have changed recently, fear not, as XE updates every time it’s connected to the internet.

Kayak

Available for Android, BlackBerry, iOS and Windows Phone.

Kayak has hotels, flights and even car rental deals so you can plan and book your entire holiday from one app. And it stores all your flight information and gives you reminders so there’s no excuse for getting to the airport late.

The best bit is that you can tell it places that you want to go to and if the price drops, it’ll give you a nudge.

PinDrop

Available for Android and iOS.

Plan where you want to visit before you go on holiday with PinDrop, and you can leave all the guidebooks and maps behind.

It lets you mark on Google Maps exactly where the places are that you want to visit, and then lead you to them. And if you mark your hotel too, you’ll never get lost. It also a good idea to drop a pin somewhere you think you mightn't be able to find again.
