Best apps for cartoonists

It's Cartoonists Day this week (5 May), celebrating the anniversary of the first ever colour cartoon. It was called 'The Yellow Kid', and it was published in the New York World way back in 1895.

For years the weapon of choice for professional cartoonists was a trusty pencil and sketchpad. But things have changed. These days, they’re just as likely to be found hard at work in front of a desktop computer or mobile device. And for budding comic strip creators, there’s a whole range of great apps available. Here’s a few of the best.

Doodle BuddyDOODLE BUDDY

iOS (Free) / Windows Phone (Free)

Doodle Buddy’s a great place to start if you (or your kids) want to get into drawing and doodling on your mobile device. It’s really easy to use by ‘finger-painting’ on the screen and tapping icons at the bottom to change your drawing tools (brushes, chalk, glitter etc.) and adjust their sizes. Plus, it comes with a range of fun and kid-friendly stamps and backgrounds.

How To DrawHOW TO DRAW

iOS (Free) / Android (Free)

How To Draw is your very own art teacher. If you’ve had your fill of aimless doodling and want a proper drawing lesson, this is the app for you. You’ll be taken through each drawing step-by-step, and you’ll have the chance to create cartoons, plus a range of more serious subjects such as animals and landscapes.

Sketchbook Express
SKETCHBOOK EXPRESS

iOS (Free) / Android (Free)

If you’ve got basic drawing skills and want to get more serious, you might want to check out SketchBook Express. It’s a professional-grade painting and drawing tool capable of producing some pretty awe-inspiring images, and it’s packed with impressive features including layering effects, and an advanced paint engine for smooth and precise brush strokes.

Artflow

ARTFLOW

Android (Free)

ArtFlow is one of the most popular digital sketchbook apps for Android, and it’s easy to see why. It’s got a huge range of over 70 brushes and tools, and some advanced artworking features including colour adjustment options (brightness, saturation etc.) with the ability to add up to 16 layers with different blending modes.

Comic Book!
COMIC BOOK!

iOS (£2.29)

Okay, so once you’ve got your doodling, drawing and cartooning skills down to a fine art (pun intended) you’ll probably want to put it all together and create your own comic strip. That’s where ComicBook! comes in. It lets you put your images (or photographs) into a multi-panel page layout, and then add captions to it all, to create your own mini-masterpiece.

If you’ve used any of these apps then let us know how you got on. Did you manage to create an impressive work of art? Or do you have any other apps you’d recommend? Let us know.
