App Review: Riff

Meet Riff, the new video app from Facebook:

It’s been out for a couple of weeks now and has won us over with its simple, social charms… let’s find out more about it.

How to use Riff

Riff is all about creating video chains with your friends. You can start your own chain, or add to existing ones.

It’s easy to start your own Riff video chain. Simply come up with an interesting subject, film your short video (you’re allowed up to 20 seconds), and use the app to share it with friends on the likes of Facebook or Twitter.

Then, if your friends are creative and suitably inspired, they can make their own video and add it to yours.

But this is where things get interesting. If your friend shares the video chain (on Facebook, for example), then all their Facebook friends will be able to add a video and share it too… and so on (think about the old ‘Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon’ game. It’s a bit like that). Pretty soon your video chain could go viral with contributors from all over the world.

Need some Riff inspiration?

When you sign up to Riff you’ll be able to view some featured video chains to give you a bit of inspiration. ‘Things to juggle’ has various people trying to juggle random objects, and there’s a ‘Ninja’ chain with people demonstrating their ninja-like concealment skills (or lack thereof).

If you’ve got an extended family dotted all over the world, Riff could be a great way for sharing seasonal messages or cute baby videos. Or, what about creating a shared karaoke session with various friends singing a few lines each? With a little thought, you should be able to come up with some ideas to entertain your fellow Riffers.

Let’s Riff…

As we said at the beginning, Riff is a Facebook app, and their previous efforts have been a bit hit and miss. But we think that this is definitely one of their better efforts, and we’ve had lots of fun with it.

Having said that, Riff’s not quite perfect. We’d like the chance to be able to edit our videos before we post them. Or perhaps even to upload videos we’ve already created. But unfortunately, Riff doesn’t allow for any editing or uploading at the moment. You need to shoot your video in real-time and post it straight away. Which is fine – just don’t make any mistakes, that’s all.

Why not pick up Riff for free on Android or iOS, give it a go and see how far your videos spread?

Don’t forget to let us know how you get on. Share your comments below.
