App Review: Hooks

What was the last notification you received? We're guessing it might have been for something fairly useless, from a long-forgotten game or app.

It doesn’t have to be like that. Wouldn’t it be great if you got notifications you wanted? About things that matter to you?

Say hello to Hooks (free on iOS and Android). Hooks will send you notifications for the things that are important to you. Sports scores, weather reports, film releases, gaming news and lots more besides.

Getting into Hooks

The first thing you’ll see when you install Hooks is a plus button for you to create your first alert. Tap it, and you’ll be able to choose from one of the many preset notifications (there are over 100 channels and a million alerts to choose from).

Once you select an alert, you’ll usually be able to customise it further and fine-tune the type of notification you’ll get. For example, if you want to get updates from TechCrunch, you can ask it for gaming news only.

When you create an alert, you can ask to receive a push notification, or have a sound played on your phone, or both. And when you get an alert you don’t have to keep it all to yourself - you can share the news via Facebook, Twitter, email or by text.

All the alerts you’ve set up can easily be found under Notifications. If you want to delete an alert, swipe it to the left and tap on the bin.

You can also ‘favourite’ your most important alerts by tapping the heart icon under the alert description. If you want to view your list of favourites, tap the hamburger button in the top left corner of your screen, then ‘Favorites’ (yes, it’s spelt the American way).

We’re hooked already

We like the look and feel of Hooks a lot. It’s got a clean and simple interface that’s easy to use, and nothing on it feels too complicated.

A notification centre that gives you notifications you care about? Sometimes the simplest ideas are the best.
