Amazon’s audiobook library, Audible, has returned to the Sonos app, letting you listen to your favourite narrators and actors as easily as you would Spotify.

Of course, those with a PLAY:5 have always had the option of using a line-in input from their smartphones or tablets, but the update will be big news for PLAY:1 and PLAY:3 owners.

Following a software update in 2015, Audible services were removed from the Sonos platform. At that time, Sonos wrote on its website: "Knowing that our Audible integration was badly out-of-date, we made the decision to remove the existing service with the intention of replacing it with a better Audible experience at the same time. This was a mistake. Removing functionality without having a replacement was never our intention.

“Unfortunately, we haven’t been able to get Audible, as it currently stands, to work with many of the new improvements we’re bringing to your Sonos app. And since you’re part of our Sonos family, we just wanted to say we’re sorry.”

Audible is back

The audiobook library, boasting over 100,000 titles, is a premium service that costs £7.99 p/m, and you can enjoy a 30-day free trial with no obligation to continue. Or if you’ve already got a subscription, this is how you get it up and running through the Sonos Controller app.

  • Scroll down to ‘Add music services’ on the left
  • Tap the Audiobooks.com logo
  • Enjoy

As Audiobooks.com is an Amazon product, it will come as no surprise that the service is a permanent feature of Sonos competitor, Amazon Echo. Providing you’re already set up with an account, you can ask Alexa to play your top titles. Here are a few commands to try out…

  • “Alexa, play [literature title]”
  • “Alexa, play [title] from Audible”
  • “Alexa, go back/go forward” (to jump between paragraphs)
  • Or, if you really want ruin the narrative: “Alexa, go to the last chapter”
