Alcatel OneTouch Pop Star hands on

The Alcatel OneTouch Pop Star is the latest mid-range smartphone from the French company. It’s loaded with decent specs and doesn’t cost the Earth, so let’s see how it does in the real world.

Comfortable design

The first thing we noticed when we picked up the Pop Star was that its back has been carefully shaped to feel more comfortable in the palm of your hand. But the design focus doesn’t stop there.

In the box there are three swappable back covers, meaning you can switch the colour of the Pop Star to suit your mood.

The only thing that slightly lets down the design is the big bezel around the screen, which makes the phone look a little dated.

Vibrant screen

Turning the Pop Star on shows something you might not be expecting from a phone that costs as little as this – a big, bright, HD screen.

Measuring 5-inches and having that high resolution, the screen on the Pop Star is ideal for movies, makes games more exciting and shows text really clearly. This display really is a stand-out feature.

Bags of power

But the good news doesn’t end with the screen. Keeping everything running is a pretty powerful quad core processor that can handle all the top apps and games quickly. That’s handy because the Pop Star runs Android 5.1 Lollipop, which has around 1.5 million apps ready to download.

And to make sure you can enjoy everything all day, Alcatel has squeezed a big 2,000mAh battery into the Pop Star.

Shareable photos

If you’re an Instagram fan, you’ll be pleased with the two cameras on the Pop Star. The 8MP main camera takes photos with good colours, especially in HDR mode, while the 5MP selfie cam gives plenty of detail.

What’s more, the Pop Star can record Full HD video, so you could even run a YouTube channel from the phone.
