5 hidden iOS tips and tricks

iOS 10 is just around the corner, with stacks of exciting new features.

While we’re waiting patiently for it, we thought it might be worth taking a look at the current iOS. It’s now so feature-rich, we reckon there are quite a few neat tricks that you might not know too much about.

So without further ado, here are our top five hidden iOS tips and tricks.

1. Create your own vibration pattern.

Your device comes with a few vibration options, but our favourite way of recognising exactly who’s on the other end of your vibrating phone is to create your own pattern.

Just go to Settings> Sounds> Ringtones> Vibration> Create New Vibration, and tap out your own memorable pattern. You can use this feature to customise contacts and different types of notification.

2. Don’t put up with weak Wi-Fi

A poor Wi-Fi connection is incredibly frustrating. That’s where Wi-Fi Assist can help. It tracks the strength of your Wi-Fi, and if it’s weak, your phone will automatically switch back to your mobile data connection.

If you’re worried that this will make a dent in your monthly data usage, fear not. Wi-F Assist doesn’t activate for background downloading or data-hungry apps that stream video and music.

3. Send a quick reply

Thanks to the wonder of 3D Touch, you can send a quick reply on Messages. Just do a deep press on a conversation to bring up a list of common short replies. Different conversations will bring up their own list of replies.

4. Share your location

If you’ve arranged to meet up with a friend somewhere and they’re nowhere to be seen, there’s no need to send them a lengthy message describing exactly where you are. You can just send them your location instead.

To do this, tap Details in the upper-right corner of a message thread, and then select ‘Send My Current Location’. Your friend will then receive a map with your GPS location clearly marked.

5. Give Siri a new voice

Okay, so perhaps this trick isn’t as useful as the others on this list, but it’s probably our favourite. We all love Siri and the sound of her voice, but why not go for a change? If you want to give her a male voice, or change her accent (she can be British, American or Australian), go to Settings> General> Siri, and choose the Language and Voice Gender you want to hear.

If you’ve got any other iOS tips and tricks you wouldn’t mind sharing, let’s hear them. Drop us a comment below.
