In a surprise announcement today, LG has unveiled a brand new smartwatch, the LG G Watch R. First thing you’ll notice is the round face, making it look more like a traditional watch. And there’s also the stainless steel body, so it’s a strikingly different look from the original LG G Watch.
LG’s new watch is actually the first to use a special form of screen, known as a Plastic OLED. In short, it’s a really energy efficient display with ultra bright colours. It’ll help the LG G Watch R to be easy to read in sunlight too. And at 1.3” it’s a good size to check your notifications and other odds and ends.
The screen might be the most obvious feature of the G Watch R, but it’s got a whole lot more. It’s water resistant, just like the G Watch, so you can take it for a run in the rain. In fact, it’ll survive half an hour under a metre of water no problem. It also has a heart rate monitor, so you can check your heart rate in real time, making it easy to tell if you’re exercising hard enough.
Running the Android Wear software, the LG G Watch R can link up to your smartphone, letting you control it from your wrist. Check texts, reply to emails, look up the weather, schedule meetings. In fact, with voice control, you can ask questions and tell the G Watch R to do things on your phone without using your hands. And, with a 410mAh battery, which is one of the biggest in any smartwatch, we’d expect some pretty good battery life results too.
The LG G Watch R will be available in the fourth quarter of 2014, although prices are not yet finalised.
