Top tips for using Instagram

Is your Instagram game lacking? If so, listen up. Because we’ve got some great tips to make sure you’re doing Instagram right. You might gain a few extra followers in the process… If you were to really take the bull by the horns, you could even make some cold hard cash.

But let’s take it one step at a time…

#YesFilter

Using hashtags effectively on Instagram is a good way of letting people find your snaps. A popular hashtag is #NoFilter – a way of bragging that your picture is so good, it doesn’t need an Insta filter.

Frustratingly, some of the more follower-hungry photographers have started using the hashtag, when they HAVE in fact used a filter - obviously chucking Instagram etiquette out the window. Thankfully, there’s a way for you to expose these imposters. Simply copy the url address, and paste it into Filter Fakers.

For the animal lover

Is your pet the main focus of your Instagram account? That’s sweet, but sometimes animals don’t always stay in the right place when you’re trying to get their good side. Thankfully, there’s an app for that.

LookBirdy (for iOS users) and BarkCam (for Android users) both work in the same way. They make a noise to get your pet’s attention before the shutter closes.

For the foodies

Are you addicted to sharing pictures of your food? You might want to think about sharing your food for real. With #FoodShareFilter you can support the fight against hunger and strife - this is how it works:

  • Buy the app from the Google Play Store or the App Store (it's less than a quid).
  • Take a photo and use the filter.
  • All proceeds go to helping those in poverty the world over.

Boomerang and Hyperlapse

Depending on what kind of phone you use, there are extra Instagram treats out there to help you stand out.

If you’re an iPhone user, you can check out Hyperlapse, which lets you create stunning timelapse videos with relative ease. It’s free, and great fun to use.

On the other hand, you might be an Android user, meaning you get to play with Boomerang(also available on iOS). The tagline ‘It’s not a photo. It’s not a gif. It’s a Boomerang’, doesn’t really say much, but essentially you can create 2-3-second videos that loop back on themselves. Go ahead - check it out.
