How to take sensational selfies

Love them or hate them, selfies are here to stay, so you might as well join in and start making the most of your front-facing camera. Here are our top tips for taking stunning selfies.

GET A SELFIE STICK

One thing that ruins countless selfies is having to stretch your arm out further than it’s meant to go just to get you and your friends in the shot. So we definitely recommend getting a selfie stick. You just clip your phone to one end, extend it and press a small button that sends a Bluetooth signal to your phone to work the shutter. It’ll put an end to dropping your phone from trying to work the camera at arm’s length and you’ll get more people into your selfies too.

DON’T TAKE GRAINY SELFIES

Make sure everything’s well-lit. If you’re on a night out with friends, that might be tough. But, if you use a friend’s phone as a torch, you’ll find your selfies look much better. You should also make sure you’ve got a high resolution front-facing camera. The Huawei Ascend P7 tops the list at the moment with an astonishing 8 megapixel one. That’s sharp enough to see the reflection in your eyes. The HTC One M8 and Huawei Ascend G6 will also take some sharp photos with their 5MP front cameras.

EDIT YOUR SELFIES

There are some really handy apps that’ll help you edit your selfies and make them look great. We really like VSCOCam. It can make your selfies look really unique and is actually useful for all your photos. Some phones, like theSamsung Galaxy S5and HTC One M8, can automatically tune your photos to make you look fantastic. They’ll add makeup, remove spots and even adjust the shape of your face, just like the professionals do on Photoshop. It’s the easiest way to edit your selfies to perfection.

GET EVERYONE IN YOUR SELFIE

Group selfies, or ‘wefies’, can be awkward as everyone tries to squeeze into frame – so we recommend using Selfie360. It’s a great app that lets you take panoramic selfies with any phone that has a front-facing camera so there’s no limit to the number of people you can get into a photo. Alternatively, the HTC One M8 has a wide angle lens so you can fit more people into every shot, while the Huawei Ascend P7 actually has a panoramic selfie mode built in.

SHARE YOUR PERFECT SELFIE

Once you’ve taken the perfect selfie, you need somewhere to share it. You could just post it to Facebook orInstagram, but we really like the new Selfies app. It’s like a social network just for selfies, even comments are made with selfies.

DRONES DO IT BETTER

If you’re looking for something a bit different, maybe you need the Nixie drone. This miniature robot straps around your wrist, and when the selfie feels just right, you can set it to fly off – it’ll then snap a photo, and flyright back to you.

Sounds nuts, right? Check it out for yourself in this video from CES 2015.
