Google’s most recent operating system update round up

With the recent arrival of Google’s smartphones (Pixel and Pixel XL), we got our first look at a totally pure version of the Android operating system – in the form of Nougat 7.0. Now, however, just weeks after its release, there was an update. This is what 7.1’s bringing to the table...

App shortcuts

This feature isn’t too dissimilar to iPhone’s 3D Touch that came with iOS 9, only that there’s no actual pressure-sensitivity in the smartphone’s display. By long-pressing on certain apps on the homescreen, you’ll be offered shortcuts so you can get things done quicker than ever before.

Basically, instead of going into the app and navigating your way through menus, you’ll be given the option to go directly to the app’s most popular functions.

Image keyboard support

The new keyboard, which works in Google’s Messenger app, now supports much more than Android’s smiley faces. Tap the ‘emoji’ button, and you’ll be able to enjoy all the GIFs the world has to offer.

Unfortunately the functionality hasn’t been extended into the other Google apps just yet, so Hangouts, Allo, Gmail, and the rest will hopefully be coming soon.

Design updates

Your grouped apps will now appear inside small bubbles, instead being stacked in front of each other as they are at the moment. And the pull-down notification bar is now black, with a blue slider running along the top to adjust your screen’s brightness. The colour updates are said to complement the Google palette.

How do I get Android Nougat 7.1?

Most new Android smartphones launching this year will be running Android N out the box, and an over-the-air update has already started making its way to Samsung and LG.
