Top Pay-as-you go smartphones

Our pick of the best Pay-as-you-go phones, at prices that won’t break the bank…
Top Pay-as-you go smartphones

Pay-as-you-go phones are all about freedom and flexibility. They don't tie you down to any contracts, and you can top them up with credit whenever you want. That’s why they make such good gifts.

There’s a great selection of Pay-as-you-go phones at Carphone Warehouse. And if you don’t want to splash out too much, here are some that sit comfortably under the £150 mark.

HTC Desire 530

This is a phone that really stands out, thanks to its paint-speckled finished. No two Desire 530’s are exactly alike - each design is completely unique.

The 5-inch LCD HD display looks great even when you step out into bright light, and the 8MP main camera comes complete with autofocus for clear, blur-free photographs.

Because the Desire 530 is an HTC phone, swiping left from the homescreen takes you to Blinkfeed. This is HTC’s news and social media feed, and it’ll keep you updated social media posts and all the news you’re interested in.

Samsung Galaxy J5 (2016)

The 2016 version of Samsung’s Galaxy J5 is a huge improvement over its predecessor. The HD display has increased from 5-inches to 5.2-inches, while the surrounding bezel has actually shrunk. That’s good news, because it means the phone itself hasn’t had to grow in size too much.

The top quality 13MP camera sensor has a massive f/1.9 aperture that lets in a huge amount of light. That gives you bright and clear pictures, even when lighting conditions aren’t great. The phone’s huge 3,100mAh battery will easily keep you going all day, and if you’re ever running low, you can call on Samsung’s Ultra Power Saving mode to keep going for even longer.

Alcatel Pop 4

The Alcatel Pop 4 comes packed with all the essentials. It’s got a 5-inch HD display, great front and rear cameras (each with a flash), long-life battery, and a handy quick charging function that can power you up to 50% in 30 minutes.

It’s a good-looking phone too, with a slimline curved design. And if you’re into customisation, you can remove the smooth plastic-coated back and add another cover of your choice. There’s a whole range of colourful alternatives.

Huawei P8 Lite

Yes, the Huawei P8 Lite is a budget phone, but it actually has a lot of features you’d expect to find on much more expensive handsets. It looks like a premium device too, with its ultra-thin 7.7mm body, subtly curved edges and metallic finish.

The quick launching 13MP camera is outstanding, and has a range of modes including panoramic, HDR, best photo and face/smile detection. The 5MP front-facing camera isn’t half bad either, and its wide selfie panoramic mode will make your scenic holiday selfies the envy of your Instagram mates.

Sony Xperia XA

The 5-inch display on the Sony Xperia XA stretches from edge to edge. The frame itself is hardly visible, so you can completely immerse yourself in your favourite games or movies.

The 13MP camera has a super-fast autofocus for great action shots – simply touch anywhere on the screen, and you instantly focus in on your subject. And just like other more expensive Xperias, battery life on the XA is pretty awesome. You’ll be able to keep going for two days before you need to think about heading to a charger.
