Things that will look amazing in slow motion

At the moment, a lot of new phones are rocking a super slo-mo camera. The recently released Sony Xperia XZ2, Samsung Galaxy S9 and Huawei P20 all offer slow motion recording at 960 frames per second. With videos that slow, you’ll pick up some serious detail – and have some serious fun.

But what things should you be filming to really make the most of your super slo-mo camera? We’ve picked out a few things you simply have to try.

Anything watery


Whether it’s a diver puncturing the still peacefulness of a swimming pool, a sprinkler hurling jagged spears of water through the air, the rain lashing down or a dog shaking off water from the sea, there’s nothing liquid-based that isn’t completely satisfying to watch in slow motion.

Sport


Broadcasters have been giving us sport in slow motion for decades by way of the action replay, and there’s one simple reason for that… because it looks great. You can turn the most explosive sprint into something graceful and magnificent. Feel the hit as two sportspeople clash on the field of play, and appreciate the deftest movements and touches. Even something as apparently undramatic as a break in pool is given new life…

Kids


Bring kids’ boundless enthusiasm and joy to life (it might be the only way to slow them down).

Stuff that’s out of control


Whether it’s a china cup being dropped, eggs being thrown or a building being knocked down, it all looks great in slow motion. It’s entirely up to you whether you think it’s worth destroying everything in your home – or your home itself – for the sake of a great video.

Nature


A bird in flight, a bee buzzing around a flower, horses galloping through a field – think how good they’d look in slow motion. Or forget the animals, and get a great shot of trees or flowers gently swaying blowing in the breeze.

Weather


Thunderbolt and lightning, very, very frightening me. OK, it doesn’t make sense, but Queen were on to something when they wrote this. But as well as being frightening, lightning looks great in slow motion (best filmed from inside, though). Rain and wind takes on a dramatic edge in slo-mo, and snowfall looks even more serene (snow-motion, if you will).
