The biggest phones of the year

2018 has already been a big one for smartphones, and there's still more to come. When it comes to major flagships, this is what we know so far…

Samsung Galaxy Note 9

Samsung has already started talking about the Note 9. We’ve heard that the new handset could have a staggering 6.4-inch display and a huge battery to support it. We’re also expecting to see a few improvements made to the iconic S Pen.

Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium

Sony has announced that the Xperia XZ2 Premium will arrive this summer. It’s going to be a metal and glass handset with a ‘3D glass’ surface and a 5.8-inch 4K HDR display (30% brighter than the last year’s XZ Premium, Sony says). It’ll also have a dual lens camera set up, weighing in at 19MP + 12MP.

BlackBerry KeyTwo

BlackBerry’s first new phone of 2018 will be the successor to last year’s BlackBerry KeyOne. The new device is rumoured to feature a dual-camera set up – if so, that would be a serious upgrade on the KeyOne’s single lens camera. A slimmer, sleeker design is also on the cards - and as revealed in a recent tweet by BlackBerry, you can see that it'll be with us very soon.

LG G7 ThinQ

The next LG flagship phone will be called the G7 ThinQ, according the LG Korea site.

A display of at least 6-inches is rumoured, and we expect it to have an 18:9 aspect ratio - LG was one of the first companies to introduce this. A dual camera set-up is also highly likely.

Pixel 3

Google already has a new line of Pixels in the works, currently codenamed: Crosshatch, Albacore and Blueline. They’ll probably be revealed by the Mountain View company in October.

Fun fact: The fishy codenames have become a bit of a tradition for the company’s smartphones, with the likes of Marlin, Walleye and Sailfish appearing in the past. Anyway, we digress…

The new smartphones will all undoubtedly be running the currently unnamed Android P OS in the purest form, and the cameras will be of the highest calibre if the previous releases are anything to go by. There are also rumours that Google may try for the full-screen phone, which would really put it on the map for innovation.

Nokia 9

We could see a new top-end flagship from Nokia before the end of 2018. Rumours are that the Nokia 9 will tout a curved screen with the tall 18:9 ratio, and a camera partnership with Carl Zeiss for pin-sharp photography.
