Our mobile gaming round-up from E3 2018

E3, the world’s biggest annual gaming event, has wrapped up for another year. And while most of the focus was on PC and console games, there was plenty for mobile gaming fans to get excited about. To save you the pain of going through all the news from the event, we’ve rounded up the best and biggest mobile announcements right here…

Fortnite

Let’s start with some exciting news for Android owners. Fortnite is on its way. Its developers, Epic Games, tweeted during E3 2018 to say that it’s definitely happening some time “this summer”. That’s all the detail we’ve got for now but we’ll keep you updated. In the meantime, you might want to check out our tips and tricks on being the last person standing. As well as being a crack shot, you’ll need to be a master builder.

The Elder Scrolls: Blades

The Elder Scrolls: Blades is a dungeon-exploring game that promises console-quality graphics, from the award-winning game studio Bethesda. You’ll be cast as a member of the Blades (top agents of the empire, no less) and your combat and sorcery skills will be tested to the max as you progress through increasingly hostile terrain. From what we’ve seen, Bethesda has paid close attention to making the game as mobile friendly as possible. Most of the actions can be carried out using just your thumb, and you’ll be able to play both vertically and horizontally.

The Elder Scrolls: Blades will be free to download on both Android and iOS. There’s no exact release date for it yet, but you can pre-register on the Google Play Store right now.

Gears of War Pop!

Microsoft's famous sci-fi shooter Gears of War is getting a makeover for mobile. Rather surprisingly, it’s going to be a mash-up with those oh-so-cute Funko Pop toys. The trailer above is pretty much all we’ve got to go on at the moment – and it doesn’t reveal how the game will actually play – but we’re expecting good things. The thought of Gears of War coming to mobile in any shape or form has got us intrigued. We’ve got a bit of a wait on our hands though. Gears of War Pop! will be available “sometime next year”.

Command & Conquer: Rivals

Command and Conquer is a name that will conjure up fond memories for gamers of a certain vintage. From 1995 to 2012, more than a dozen of these real-time strategy classics were released – and now, Commander & Conquer is back. Or is it?

Command and Conquer: Rivals may prove to be a controversial release from Electronic Arts, because although the name is the same, it’s a completely different beast. You can forget all about carefully harvesting resources and painstakingly constructing bases for a start. Instead, you’re thrown right into the action in a single battlefield and have to fight another army for control of a missile launch platform. The awesome looking launch trailer does make it look like an awful lot of fun though, so the choice is yours - if you’re not an old-school Command & Conquer purist, you can pre-register for Command & Conquer: Rivals on the Google Play store.

Microsoft game streaming – coming soon

And finally, some interesting mobile gaming news from Microsoft. Philip Spencer, Microsoft’s gaming chief, announced during the company’s E3 keynote speech that it was working on a game streaming service for “console-quality gaming on any device.” He didn’t offer any more information than that, unfortunately. But if it means we’ll soon be able to play Xbox One games on our smartphones, then all we’ve got to say is – we’re in.

Are you excited about any of the mobile gaming news above? Where do your Command & Conquer loyalties lie? Post a comment below and share your thoughts.
