Why you need to know about the 2017 A-series
Over the past few years, Samsung has been putting a lot of work into its A-series brand of smartphones – the Galaxy A3 and Galaxy A5. And recently we’ve seen the launch of this year’s versions.
Unsurprisingly, they’re the best to date – with impressive new specs, top quality features, and brand new designs, bringing them in line with the current flagship, the Galaxy S7.
Samsung Galaxy A3 (2017)
The Galaxy A3 (2017) looks pretty much like a miniature Galaxy S7. Its rounded edges and glass build make for a really premium look and feel, while the new fingerprint scanner – embedded in the home button – drives home the high standard.
On the back of the phone is a 13MP camera, with a dedicated LED flash, able to shoot 1080p video at 30fps. You also get loads of Samsung’s photo editing effects, to make sure your photos are the best they can be. And for good measure, there’s a secondary 8MP front-facing sensor, just above the 4.7-inch HD screen.
Under the hood there’s a very capable 1.6GHz octa-core processor - a big deal when compared to last’s year’s A3, which had a 1.5GHz quad-core chip. There’s also 16GB of storage, which can be expanded by 256GB with a microSD card.
Take a look at both smartphones in our hands on video:
Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017)
The Galaxy A5 (2017) follows a very similar design to its little brother, and is slightly larger than the S7 with a 5.2-inch Full HD display.
The real stand-out features on this phone, however, are its camera lenses. The 16MP sensor on the back features a 3MP boost on last year’s model, but it’s the 16MP front-facing camera we’re excited about. The high-powered camera means you’ll be able to video chat in Full HD resolution, and take crystal-clear selfies to no end.
On the inside there’s 3GB RAM and a 1.9GHz octa-core processor – so you’ll have no trouble playing even the most demanding of mobile games.
The crowning glory of these smartphones is that they’re now protected against water and dust, certified as IP68. This means they can be submerged in 1.5m of fresh water for up to 30 minutes, and won’t take on any damage.
Both smartphones feature the new USB Type-C charging port, for fast charging. And they’re available in the exclusive peach cloud colour from Carphone Warehouse - as well as the standard black, blue, and gold.
