Are two photography lenses on a smartphone better than one?
The benefits of dual lens photography

Smartphone dual lens photography explained…

2016 has been the year of dual lenses on smartphones. Yes, LG and HTC had a go a few years ago with the Optimus 3D and One M8 respectively, but now we’re seeing real results. LG’s G5 paved the way in March at Mobile World Congress, followed by Huawei’s P9 in April, and most recently, Apple’s iPhone 7 Plus.

All these smartphones feature two lenses on their backs, but they all do different things. Lets take a closer look…

LG G5

Camera spec: 8MP and wide-angle 16MP lenses

The G5’s two lenses weigh in at 8MP and 16MP, and when they’re used together you can capture wide-angle shots at 135-degrees. Perfect if you’re forever struggling to fit everyone in the frame, or actively enjoy landscape photography.

It’s also really beneficial if you’re in a bit of a tight spot and there’s no further room to move back. Simply tap the button in the camera app, and increase the width of your frame.

Huawei P9

Camera spec: Two 12MP Leica lenses

A couple of month’s later, Huawei launched the P9 with its 12MP dual lens camera, co-engineered by Leica. Unlike the LG G5, Huawei’s focus is all about the depth of photos, and how you can alternate between near focus and background focus even after the shot’s been taken.

The P9’s Leica lenses work together, with one capturing RGB colour, and the second working on monochrome. This means that you can take some great black and white photos without using a filter, but overall the result of the two sensors’ partnership is very impressive.

iPhone 7 Plus

Camera spec: 12MP wide-angle and telephoto cameras

Now, the rumours have finally been put to bed about the new iPhone’s double lens. The larger of the two new smartphones features two 12MP sensors, and this time it’s all about getting closer.

One of the lenses is a telephoto lens, which is the complete opposite to the LG’s wide-angle sensor. Apple’s secondary lens, which isn’t on the standard iPhone 7, offers a x2 zoom, making things that are far away, look closer. And then there’s bokeh…

Bokeh is the term given to photos with an artistic background blur, normally achieved using a professional camera with a large aperture lens. The bokeh effect looks great, but to re-create it in post-production is no mean feat. This effect isn't going to be available immediately on the iPhone 7 Plus' release, and will come as a software update later, so watch this space for photo samples coming soon.
