Our 2017 ‘App of the Year’ awards

It’s that time of year again, where we cast an eye over the year that was 2017 and dish out our ‘app of the year’ awards. The winners' envelopes have just been placed in our hands, so without further ado…

Best game – Stranger Things

Free on iOS and Android

Stranger Things: The Game is charming from the minute you open the app. It has a gorgeous old-school look not too dissimilar to the Mega Drive games we used to enjoy back in the day. This is retro-style gaming in its purest, undiluted form.

It’s everything we wish free-to-play games could be. And it’s one of the most rewarding smartphone games you’ll play all year. It looks great, it’s full of charm, and has plenty to keep you entertained for hours.

Best educational app – Learn Languages with Ruby Rei

Try the first two levels free on iOS and Android

We love the idea of learning a new language while playing a video game. Where other apps and methods can feel forced to begin with, Learn languages with Ruby Rei offers a less intimidating first step towards learning a new language. It’s an app that makes learning languages fun and engaging, and it’s a worthy winner.

Best music app – NOW Music

Free trial on iOS and Android

If you like pop compilations and the latest chart music, this is the app you need in your life. Now Music’s selection of playlists and choice of radio stations is great, and the option to save songs and listen to them offline is a big hit for us too.

Best financial app – Moneybox

Free on iOS and Android

Moneybox rounds up your payments to the nearest pound, and you can then invest the difference in some of the world’s biggest companies. It’s a clever way of making small savings, and a solid introduction into the world of stocks and ISAs.

Best social app – PartyWith

Free on iOS and Android

PartyWith is a new free social meet-up app. It lets you hook up with strangers for a chat, or arrange events others might be interested in. We’re pretty sure you can’t get much more social than that, so it’s a winner as far as we’re concerned.

That brings this year’s app awards to a close. What do you think of our winners list? Would you have nominated any other apps? Comment below to share your suggestions.
