OK Google: help me!

We took a look at life’s burning questions, and how many of us are asking Google for the answer.

OK Google: help me!

It started with a debate: Why do movie characters never just Google their way out of a tight spot? It’s what 83% of us do when we need help. Many of us do it every day. So why does no movie character stop for a moment, amid the unfolding chaos around them, whip out their phone and just Google their way out of the problem?

Of course, that wouldn’t make for great viewing. But just for laughs, we thought we’d put it to the test: what would happen to these five major film plots if they had access to mobile data or broadband? The outcome could have been very different.

And the whole exercise made us think. If a mind-blowing FOUR out of FIVE of us use the internet when we need help, what dilemmas are we Googling our way out of?

OK Google, HOW CAN I BE COOL?

Come on. Confidence, people! Who cares about being cool anyway!?

Well almost one in 10 people, actually. That’s how many Brits have looked up “how to be cool” on the internet, but it’s millennials who really want to know. They’re more likely to ask Google what to do to be considered “cool” (27%), “popular” (27%) and “how to act in social situations” (32%) than any other age group.

OK Google, HOW DO I ACT ABROAD?

It’s amazing how many Brits are clueless about how to act on holiday. From not knowing how to say hello (do you announce your presence with a big BONJOUR or just kiss everyone in the room?) to how much to tip in restaurants in different countries.

Nearly a quarter (23%) of us have searched online for advice on how to act abroad and 15% have looked up what to wear in different cultures. Now, if we could just speak the language…

OK Google, HOW DO I DO MY JOB?

Oh dear. Oh dear me. Do you really need to ask?

Well for almost half the population, the answer is yes. 45% of Brits have used the internet to help them out with their careers, and a shocking 40% have blagged their way out of a work situation by Googling the answer. What’s worse, 20% of Brits say they do this at least every week– and men are by far the worst offenders when it comes to the weekly blag (29% compared with 12% of women).

OK Google, AM I IN LOVE?

Ah, the million-dollar question: Am I in love? Surely we can figure this one out for ourselves…

Nope! Well, thankfully, just 8% of us have asked the internet this all-important question, but a quarter of Brits admit to using the internet to better understand their romantic situation. Strangely, this includes asking Google whether they’re with the right person, if their partner is cheating and whether they’re ready to have kids! (8%, 8%, 8%).

Who knows, maybe the internet DOES have the answer…
