Is Nokia really bringing the 3310 back?

Could the world’s favourite retro phone be making a return?

In the run up to Mobile World Congress, the rumour mill tends to start churning out some pretty grand ideas. And this year is no different.

The latest speculation comes from notable mobile leaker, Evan Blass, claiming that Nokia, now owned by HMD Global, could be revealing “a modern version of a classic workhorse … the Nokia 3310” he writes on VentureBeat.

Although it’s just hearsay right now, the mobile tech world is getting pretty excited about the prospect of a comeback from Nokia. And following a video, posted 14 February on Nokia's Facebook page, entitled 'I wanna love you like my Nokia 3310'', there seems to be even more weight behind the fact this could really be happening. Check out the video or yourself below:

The clip features slam poet Asia Samson, talking about how he wants to love as much as he loved his 3310.

The good old days

The Nokia 3310 was launched in 2000, seven years before Apple debuted the first iPhone. The compact Nokia was celebrated for its ever-lasting battery, hardy build, and of course the very addictive, Snake.

It was a pretty simple game – you controlled the snake’s direction with the numerical keypad, with the objective of ‘eating’ the dots to make the snake longer. The only rule was that you didn’t accidentally bump into your own tail.

Samson quips above: "Who needs an Angry Bird, when I can love you like Snake?" Beautiful.

We’ll be on the ground at Mobile World Congress on 26 February to bring you all the latest news as it happens, so make sure you keep it with The Lowdown.
