How to winter-proof your smartphone

Siri, it’s cold outside

During the summer, or on holiday, you might have seen an error message on your phone telling you it’s overheating. Nothing new there. But, did you know your phone doesn’t like being too cold either?

Your phone is at its happiest in temperatures between 0°C - 35°C (or 32° – 95°F, for you imperial system fans). If it’s exposed to temperatures below freezing, things can stop working, and you might even find it powering down.

So, what can you do if this happens? And more importantly, how can you prevent it from happening in the first place?

Using your phone in the cold

If your phone shuts down in the cold, you wouldn’t be alone in thinking about immediately turning it back on. However, experts recommend you’d be better off leaving it to gradually warm back up. You don’t need to put it on a radiator, and you definitely do not need to put it in the microwave. Just be patient and leave it indoors for an hour. Your Twitter followers will understand.

The other thing to look out for is battery-drain, as this is common in cold weather. Combat it by carrying a portable powerbank with you (like this one), meaning you can power up on the go, and keep your phone warm at the same time.

Portable heater

Your smartphone can do many things, and keeping your hands warm is, in fact, one of them. If you’re willing to sacrifice a chunk of your battery power, head to your app store and look out for something like this hand-warmer app. It works your phone’s CPU to generate heat, and it will still run in the background if you’re doing other stuff. What a time to be alive, eh?

There's also a range of accessories available to order on Carphone Warehouse’s website, to make sure you can get the most from your phone in the cold. Like these snazzy Fairisle touch gloves:

They let you control your phone’s touchscreen without having to take the gloves off. Which you’ll truly appreciate if you’ve ever tried to unlock a message with the tip of your nose.
