Broadband deals for students

If you’re a student, then you’ll need good broadband for all the essentials in life. You’ll be online a lot, doing important coursework and research. And in your spare time, you’ll want a broadband package that lets you get your Netflix on, or waste a few hours on Call of Duty.

Carphone Warehouse is the best place to get impartial advice on the best home broadband deal to buy. But first of all, let’s take a look at the information you need to make the right choice…

How to get the best broadband deal

If you’re in a student house without broadband, then something obviously needs to be done.

So get your housemates together, find out what they’d like to use the internet for (and how much they can pay) and take it from there.

Finding a broadband deal to suit everyone shouldn’t be too difficult, because you’ve basically got three things to consider: how long you need it for, how much you’ll use, and how speedy you want it to be.

1. How long should your broadband contract be?
Even if you’re only planning on staying in your accommodation for a short amount of time, you should be able to find some suitable deals. In the summer, some broadband providers offer special nine-month deals for students, designed to cover term time only.

But you should also spend some time checking out longer contracts. If you find a 12-month deal that’s especially good value, it might work out cheaper than signing up for a nine-month stint.

2. How much speed do you need?
Now it’s time to think about how much speed you need.

Your broadband speed dictates how quickly you can access the internet. It’ll depend on the number of people in your house, and what you’ll all be going online for. So gather together all this information before you come to us for a chat.

3. How much internet do you want?
The issue of download limits is perhaps even more important than speed.

If you’ve got unlimited downloads, you and all your housemates can go online as much as you want. However, if your package comes with a download limit, it restricts how much you can use, so you run the risk of going offline at some point in the month.

That’s not ideal if you’re in the middle of an important online project – even worse if you’re in Call of Duty team deathmatch. All of which makes the unlimited packages a popular choice for students, even if they do cost a little more.
