What's so great about the Samsung Galaxy S9/S9+?
The Samsung Galaxy S9 has been revealed, and it’s a beauty – inside and out. We’ve had the chance to try it out for ourselves, and it wasn’t too difficult to come up with this list of nine things we love about it…
1. An incredible low-light camera
Best things first. The 12MP main camera on the S9 can automatically switch between two aperture sizes (f/2.4 and f/1.5) according to lighting conditions, to give you the perfect photograph at any time of the day or night.
The f/2.4 will give you accurate colours in daylight, but it’s the f/1.5 where things get really interesting. This is the largest aperture that’s ever been used on a smartphone, and it’s brilliant in low light. If you want to take a moody moonlit shot or capture the action in a late-night club, it’s exactly what you need.
2. Dramatic super slow-mo videos
The S9’s super slow-mo video camera slows things right down (to 960 frames per second), making everything look more dramatic and epic.
What’s more, it’s really easy to use. Simply tap a button in manual mode, or switch to auto-mode and let the S9 do it all for you. It’ll use Motion Detect technology to capture the exact moment when a moving object enters the screen, so it’s perfect for fast-paced sports, or clips of the family cat pouncing on unsuspecting dogs or elderly relatives.
3. Stunning sound, all around
Samsung has turned the volume up on the S9 - it’s 1.4 times louder than the S8. The speakers are tuned by AKG and support Dolby Atmos surround sound, giving you a fully rounded audio experience. Also, the headphone jack is present and correct, so feel free to plug in your favourite headphones – Samsung isn’t making you go wireless just yet.
4. To infinity and beyond
The Infinity Display is back in all its glory. On the Galaxy S8 it very nearly went from edge to edge, and Samsung has trimmed those tiny bezels even further on the S9. If that wasn’t enough, Samsung has also made the S9’s Super AMOLED screen 15% brighter than the S8’s.
5. Clever Bixby
Bixby Vision is smarter than ever. You can now point your phone camera at something in a foreign language, and it’ll be instantly translated on your display. Put Bixby Vision to work on a restaurant menu on your next trip abroad, and never order anything dodgy ever again (unless you really want to). At the moment, Bixby can translate 54 different languages.
6. A cartoon you
Ready to be transformed? The S9’s AR Emoji feature lets you turn yourself into a cartoon that looks and acts, well, just like you. If you’re suitably impressed by the results, you can send the new ‘emoji you’ in messages to friends, or post it for all to see on social media.
7. Ultra-secure Intelligent Scan
When it comes to smartphone security, iris scanning and facial recognition are both great standalone features. The S9’s Intelligent Scan is a cunning combination of the two, and it’s the future of smartphone security. It actually works out the best way to unlock your phone (whether that’s iris scanning or facial recognition) based on surrounding lighting conditions. That means it’ll even work in the dark.
8. + is a great addition
The Galaxy S9 is awesome, but you know what? The Galaxy S9+ is bigger and better. So, if size (and serious specs) matter to you, you’ll want to check it out.
The main difference is the extra camera on the rear of the S9+. It weighs in at 12MP and has a 2x telephoto lens for zooming in closer to your subject. Plus (no pun intended), the display on the S9+ measures a whopping 6.2-inches, compared with the S9’s 5.8-inch display.
9. The colour purple. And others
Both the S9 and S9+ will be available in a brand new colour - Lilac Purple. As you can see from the image below, it looks supremely subtle, understated and classy. We like it a lot.
If Lilac Purple isn’t your thing, you’ve also got the option of Coral Blue or the classic Midnight Black – a great choice for making that Super AMOLED display really stand out.
