5 things you didn't know your phone can do

We’ve become a nation of tech lovers who rely on our smartphones for pretty much everything. From checking the upcoming weather forecast to getting from A to B, there’s nothing that these mini computers in our pockets can’t do. However, there might be a few things that slipped off your radar, like these…

1. Snapping while you shoot

Torn between taking a photo and shooting a video? You can have the best of both worlds - whether you’re on Android or iOS. Here’s how.

If you’re the owner of an iPhone, just go to the Camera app and switch to video mode - then start recording like you normally would. To take a photo, simply tap the white button to the left/bottom of the video’s start/stop button and you’ll find your video along with your candid snaps in your photo roll.

Android users, it’s just as easy for you. Tap the video icon to record like usual, then while you’re filming hit the “camera” or “shutter” icon. Your photo will be automatically saved into your gallery. Job done!

2. Tethering’s a thing

Imagine this: you’re out and about with your laptop or tablet, desperate to connect it to some Wi-Fi – but alas, no bars can be found. Don’t panic! You might be able to connect to the 4G/3G on your trusty smartphone.

If you’re on iOS, just go to Settings > Personal Hotspot and slide the dial at the top of your screen over to green. Then, you’ll be able to find your phone in the list of Wi-Fi options on your laptop.

Android users can connect by choosing Settings > Tethering & portable hotspot and turning on ‘Portable Wi-Fi hotspot’.

3. Good vibrations

As much as we hate to admit it, there are times when it’s socially unacceptable to look at our phones. If you’re stuck in a long meeting at work or in the cinema, you can customise your vibrations to know whether a call coming through is urgent or not.

On iPhone, go into Settings > Sounds or Sounds & Haptics. Click on Ringtone or Text Tone, and at the top, you’ll see an option for Vibration. Click this and scroll down until you find the section that says Custom, then click ‘Create New Vibration’. In this part of the app, you can create your own customised vibration pattern, which you can assign to specific contacts.

If you’re on Android, you’ll need to install and launch the free app, Contact Vibrate. Just open the app and tap the ‘Set vibration to contact’ option. Scroll and search for the contact you want to apply the custom vibration too, and you’re done.

4. Brush up on your brushing

If you’re an electric toothbrush user, it’s likely that you can download a free app, which gives you all the Intel on your brushing technique.

For example, The Oral-B app uses Bluetooth technology to track your position and shows you how to brush all zones in your mouth equally and evenly.

5. Let’s get one thing straight

Don’t have a spirit level at hand? Don’t sweat it – your phone is all you need to make sure the pictures in your home are straight. Just download the Bubble Level app from Apple Store or Google Play and you’ll have an easy-to-use spirit level right in your pocket.
