Say hello to our chatbots

The rise of the chatbot continues. Over 1000 have now been built on Facebook Messenger, Skype and other platforms. Not all of them are worth chatting to, of course, but there are a few that we think are definitely worth checking out. So without further ado, here’s our pick of the top bots that we think you should get acquainted with.

Kayak

Kayak can help you find flights, hotel accommodation and car rentals quickly and easily. It does this by asking you simple questions like destination and travel date, and then searches hundreds of travel sites on your behalf.

If you see an option you like, you can simply click ‘Book’ to make a booking. Kayak is available on Slack, Messenger, Amazon Echo and iMessage.

Mitsuku

Meet Mitsuku – your artificially intelligent friend. Mitsuku has been designed to chat about absolutely anything, so you can talk with it for hours on end. It replies to your questions in a human-like way, and is capable of basic reasoning. It can even play games with you, and never cheats (as far as we can tell).
Mitsuku is available on Kik and Skype.

Genius

If you’re looking to test your grey matter, give Genius a try. It’s a chatbot created by National Geographic, to promote its Genius programme about Albert Einstein – everyone’s favourite theoretical physicist.

The chatbot is more than happy to teach you all about Einstein's life and work, using a mix of text-based responses, images and GIFs. Genius is available on Messenger.

Heston Bot

If you want to improve your culinary skills, then this robotic version of top chef, Heston Blumenthal, is exactly what you need.

Heston Bot gives you cooking tips, recommended flavour pairings and regularly updated seasonal menus. You can also view video messages from the human Heston, and get tips and tricks to help you become an expert in the kitchen. Heston Bot is available on Skype.

And Chill

And Chill just does one thing, but it does it well. Send it a few short messages, and it’ll give you some decent Netflix recommendations. If you’re in the mood for a movie but find yourself browsing endlessly through all those Netflix categories, give it a try. And Chill is available on Messenger.
