Follow these tips and save money on your next phone
We understand the excitement in the run-up to New Phone Day. After a long wait, that big day will finally arrive, and you can wander down to your local Carphone Warehouse and walk out with a shiny new device.
But did you know, with a bit of inside knowledge, you could be making some big savings? Check out the following tips before heading to the high street.
The new phone calendar
Most major manufacturers release one flagship smartphone a year (with the exception of Sony – generally working on a six-month cycle). If having the latest tech is high on your priorities, we’d bet you’d be disappointed if you bought a new phone, and a new model was announced a few months later. Here are some rough guidelines:
- iPhone – September
- Samsung Galaxy S-series – late Feb/early March
- LG G-series – late February
- Google Pixel-series - October
- Huawei P-series – late February
Top tip: On the other hand, if you want to save some money, you could always look to buy last year’s model, just as the new one comes out.
Carphone Warehouse is the home of comparison. Which means, there’s always a few options to choose from. If your contract’s up, you could be getting a better monthly rate by switching networks.
We compare much more than mobile phone contracts, however. To make your money go even further, ask about our broadband, TV, and energy comparison services. Switch and save your energy provider with us, and save £267 on average on your annual bill.
Your new stuff mightn't be compatible with your old stuff
The mobile tech world moves along quite quickly, meaning there’s always something new just around the corner. If you’re getting a new phone, and you plan on using your old case, or your old headphones, it’s definitely worth double-checking compatibility.
If, for example, you’ve just bought a new pair of wired headphones, and you fancy a Google Pixel 2 or iPhone 8, you’ll need a headphone adaptor, as neither smartphone has a 3.5mm jack input. It’s a similar story with phone cases. Manufacturers are always moving the camera lenses around, so there’s no guarantee your old case will fit your new phone.
Top tip: Finally, you should always remember that some manufacturers give away free gifts and cash back with their new smartphones. Check out the latest deals by following this link.
